Packagingboxes

Why do the packaging costs on the quote and order confirmation not match?

As soon as you place an order, our online software Sophia® calculates the packaging costs. This is an estimate that is correct in many cases. Unfortunately, there are also cases where the costs are higher or lower. There can be a number of reasons for this.

For example, the shape and size of your metal parts can play a role. Challenging shapes (especially in bending), for example, turn out to take up more space and be harder to stack. More pallets are needed than expected. Material strength and thickness also weigh in when stacking. Thinner material can be less strong and bend faster when stacking. Again, more pallets are needed. These are reasons why costs may be higher.

Another factor is whether you order different types of material. For instance, stainless steel and aluminium are not simply packed with other types of steel to prevent corrosion during transport. Our dispatch staff assess this for each order and sometimes combine these types - with the right protection - and sometimes not.

Also, each material type is cut in a separate machine. These parts come together at our Expedition department. Then it is often possible to merge more parts than previously estimated. In this case, costs can be lower.

The above hopefully gives an idea of scenarios where costs may vary. We do want to stress that many more scenarios and exceptions are possible.

Finally, it is good to know exactly what costs may vary. These can be one-off and returnable packaging costs as well as transport costs. Are one-off packaging costs and/or transport costs higher than those quoted? Then we will bear these.

Why do returnable packaging costs change? Pallets and pallet collars fall under returnable packaging. For these, you will already be largely refunded after return.
