Hems in sheet metal

We previously announced that our online software Sophia® now automatically recognises hems. Hemming is a type of bending in which the metal is folded onto itself. In this blog post, you can learn more about the various hem types, their applications and what is possible at 247TailorSteel.

The various hem types

Hems can be created with various shapes. Each hem type has its own advantages and disadvantages. We explain them below.

1. Flat hem

This hem type is the most popular and is also the easiest to make. However, not all materials can be used, as the metal can break or crack.

2. Open Hem

Open hems are often used to connect parts. This requires a spacer. This type is also subject to a material restriction, as there is a significant risk that the metal will break.

3. Teardrop hem

The final hem type is the teardrop hem. This type is used for materials that are not flexible enough for closed seams.

At 247TailorSteel, Sophia® recognises and correctly programs flat hems. Open hems are also recognised, but are automatically converted to flat hems by Sophia®. Sophia® does not accept teardrop hems.

Various applications for hems

Hems are useful in various applications. This type of metalworking is used in various products, including office equipment, equipment for the food processing industry, automotive bodywork and various types of rack and storage equipment. Hemming makes the product safer, sturdier and improves its appearance.

Ordering hems in Sophia®

Now that Sophia® automatically recognises hems, it is easy to order them. You must draw the hems in your technical drawing, just as you do for other processing types.

You can find the requirements that your drawing must meet in the submission guidelines for bending.
