What is the minimum leg length?

When you bend a metal sheet, a bend is created with a straight section on each side of the bend. These straight sections are also referred to as flanges or legs.

When we bend a metal sheet on a bending machine, the sheet is pushed into a groove with a knife using a lot of force, allowing the bend to be created. But what if the legs are not long enough? Then the sheet can slip into the groove, making it impossible to create the bend.

This brings us to the definition of minimum leg length:

This is the minimum length a leg must have in order not to shoot into the groove. In other words, the minimum leg length ensures that bending is possible at all. However, there are other factors that play a role in this.

The minimum leg length varies depending on the metal, sheet thickness, and angle. View our delivery specifications for minimum leg lengths here.
