What is galvanized steel?
Galvanized steel is steel that has a metal layer applied to its surface through an electrolytic process. This is often (but not always!) done to increase corrosion resistance.
Although galvanized steel is often referred to as zinc-coated steel (due to the zinc layer), it is not always the same. The metal layer can also be made of nickel, chrome, or gold, resulting in nickel-plated, chrome-plated, or gold-plated steel, respectively. In addition, zinc-coated steel can be manufactured using thermal processes as well as electrolytic processes.
We have one type of electroplated steel in our range: Zintec. This is a CRS CR4 steel sheet with a thin layer of zinc applied to it. This makes the steel less susceptible to rusting during transport and storage. Would you like to use this type of steel outdoors? Then a coat of paint is recommended for extra protection.
Alternatives with better corrosion-resistant properties are stainless steel or the galvanized steel types like Hot dip zinc coated steel and Magnelis®.
