Which metals are suitable for powder coating (and which are not)?
The following metals are suitable for powder coating:
- Steel
- Galvanized steel
- Zinc-coated steel
- Stainless steel
- Aluminum
Each metal has its own requirements in terms of preparation. This may include specific chemical cleaning and/or a primer.
These metals are less suitable for powder coating:
- Copper
- Brass
- Lead
- Tin
- Gold
- Silver
This is partly because they cannot withstand the heat of the oven, the surfaces adhere relatively poorly, the metal conducts electricity poorly and/or the desired appearance is lost.
In addition, there are a few practical conditions that are unrelated to the type of metal but are decisive for the feasibility of a good powder coating:
- The part must fit in powder coating booths.
- The part must have eyelets or hooks from which it can be suspended.
- The material (and any soldering) must be able to withstand oven temperatures of 180°C and above.
- Ideally, the shape of the part should not have any cavities or hard-to-reach corners.
247TailorSteel does not powder coat parts itself. The above information is not conclusive advice. Therefore, always check with a third party whether your required metal can be powder coated.
Of course, we can have your laser-cut parts delivered to a third party of your choice. In this case, please enter their address as the delivery address in the Sophia® checkout (and coordinate the delivery with them). We will then ensure that your parts are delivered on the agreed date.
